Our Values
Dr. True Ballas began her academic pursuits in the study of Philosophy and Ethics. Her exploration of the ethical treatment of animals in our culture left her hungry for a way to help—ultimately through veterinary medicine.
Searching for a program that respected animal welfare, however, she found herself frustrated and disappointed. As a result, Dr. Ballas led the effort to protect animals by challenging the accepted practice of euthanizing animals just for medical study. Convincing her own school to secure “donor animals” for students—much like the human organ donor programs we have today—Dr. Ballas inspired the development of an alternative approach to veterinary education.
“I wanted to change the world,” Dr. Ballas said, “and then I fell in love with medicine!” Years practicing emergency, shelter, and general medicine refined her skills—work that was intense, demanding, and held to the highest standards of practice. Now, at Beacon Veterinary Hospital, she promotes dignity and respect for pets through client education and excellent care.
In true Arts & Crafts tradition, Beacon Veterinary Hospital encourages artistic work as a healthy and harmonious contribution to our lives. We offer an on-site gallery for local artisans to display their work. This unique blend of science and creative expression sets the stage for our approach to pet care: striving always for the richest expression of life and health. Come visit us and be part of the Beacon experience.
What is Man without the Beasts? If all the Beasts were gone, Man would die from a great loneliness of the spirit. For whatever happens to the Beasts, soon happens to Man. All things are connected.
— widely attributed to Chief Seattle or Sealth, 1854
