Our History

Our building was originally a bank, and we have preserved the bank vault for a higher use—it is our new X-Ray Room! Later the building served as the community’s Visitor Center, welcoming anyone wishing to explore this region’s richest attractions. Built in the Arts & Crafts style of architecture, this building was designed to wed functionality and natural beauty for a relaxing and productive environment. In renovating, we have tried to be true to this concept. We think you will agree that the effort was worth it.
Our facility is built on the site of the original Beacon Blanket Factory, America’s largest cotton-blanket maker from 1920 through the 1940s. Originally located in Massachusetts, the Beacon Manufacturing Company moved to Swannanoa, North Carolina in 1925, launching the southern textile industry. The Beacon Plant was the epicenter of the of the Swannanoa community; the closed factory building, built by the late Charles D. Owen, Sr., burned down in September 2003.
Beacon Blankets were woven from no more than four colors, often sporting bright geometric designs. View some popular Beacon Blankets to see why they have enjoyed such popularity for so many decades.
Our task must be to free ourselves... by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature and its beauty.
